Does Your "Best Friend" Have Diabetes?
Just like people, your loving pets can get diabetes. It occurs when their blood glucose (sugar) levels get out of control, overloading their kidneys. The excess glucose is then excreted through urine, causing them to drink more and urinate more, too. The condition is called diabetes mellitus (DM) and is the most common form of diabetes diagnosed in dogs and cats. It occurs because your pet's body (pancreas) doesn't produce enough insulin or is unable to regulate correct blood-sugar levels.
Because diabetes can cause terrible health problems for your dog and cat including heart disease and blindness—and can even be fatal—it is important to recognize the early symptoms and get the proper treatment as soon as possible.
Symptoms of Dog and Cat Diabetes:
- They will drink excessively—and urinate more, too. Cats may disregard the litter box.
- They will eat more but will lose weight.
- They will be lethargic.
- Cats may lose their coats' luster.
- Peculiar breath odor.
Early Detection Is Key
The best thing you can do for your beloved friend is to watch them for symptoms. The earlier that diabetes is detected the easier it will be to control, sometimes with diet alone. Early detection also lessens the chance of other devastating illnesses like blindness and kidney failure (the result of diabetes) to occur.
We at Dia-Care™ recommend The PetCheckup,™ an early detection and screening system for dogs and cats that screens them for all sorts of illnesses including diabetes. It is a wonderful, inexpensive tool that enables you to detect illnesses in your pets before it's too late. You and your loving pet deserve the best care possible.
Treatment
Your veterinarian will be able to do simple test t see if your dog or cat has diabetes. If they are diagnosed with the disease, insulin will be prescribed to promote healthy blood-sugar levels. High-fiber diets may also be indicated along with your vet's treatment, will help regulate your dog's and cat's blood sugar levels and it's called GlucoBalance, offered by the Only Natural Pet Store. GlucoBalance also helps to build your pet's immune system, reduces high cholesterol and promotes healing, etc. Overall, it's a good supplement to promote and maintain overall health in your adorable pet.
